Drainage or Runoff:

Other: During Sunday storm, water runoff on Madison Street between 6th & 7th flooded into my commercial space (212 N Madison). It climbed a foot up the exterior of the building and flooded comletely to the back of the building, jeopardizing thousands of dollars in equipment and stock. It appears that the sidewalk tips toward the building, and so that once the water crests over the sidewalk, it is pushed into our space. It seems to me that the issue with the sidewalk is the city's. Further, I wonder if there is anything that can be done to ensure the functioning of the sewer, which is the problem at the base of the flooding issue. I know two other spaces on that block also flooded. I don't have a photo, but can secure one from my landlord if needed. Many thanks for looking into this. Jane

This was a leaf issue this fall when a lot of leaves fell at one time followed by a rain event. This area has been added to our 'critical areas' map to be checked more frequently ahead of rain events during leaf season.

I spoke to Jane and got some more details about the rain event, where it flooded, and how her business was affected. I explained that I had made a site visit several weeks ago to observe the drainage in the area during a rain event. Although I believe the main culprit for this localized flooding was leaves, as it was the week most of the leaves fell, I still believe we need to investigate the storm capacity in the area whether it be the pipe sizing or need for more inlets. So we will further investigate our storm system to confirm if storm sewer modifications are justified.
