Recycling:

Other: I play softball at Twin Lakes where there are huge trash receptacles...but no recycling bins. This is a major problem because the only "trash" that gets thrown away are plastic bottles and aluminum cans. Honestly, there really only needs to be recycling bins there. I will be following up on this issue. It's really hard to see those plastic bags filled to the brim with things that will never disintegrate in a landfill.

Kathleen: We did a very thorough test and retest of the simplest recycling program available at Twin Lakes Sports Park. This was done after a winter of research and we launched it in the spring of 2017 or 2016. I cannot remember which. We procured the clear bagged recycle receptacles that clearly marked bottles to be recycled. These receptacles have been successful at special events and other cities and parks departments. It failed miserably and much to our own disappointment. We had a very efficient system set up to have the recyclables hauled off as well. We got so much trash and food products in the bins and we witnessed the plastic bottles being thrown in the garbage cans repeatedly. Our only conclusion that we could figure out was that such a great percentage of our participants are from out of the city..away from urban areas...out of the recyclable mindset that they either didn't care, were defiant, or both. And the weird thing to us is that the program we do up the hill at our indoor Twin Lakes Recreation Center works pretty well. We think it is the difference in customers and the indoor/outdoor difference. We are likely willing to try again but it would not be for at least 2 or 3 years as it was so overwhelmingly bad to our amazement. The only other theory we can think is that that customer base is 2 to 3 years away from being more compliant.
