City Performance: Comment

Web Form: Why for having such a vibrant and significant LGBT community does the City have basically no local recognition and programming? The City does a great job at promoting the Latino, black, women, children, and many other communities and groups. But as far as I know we have no LGBT affairs commission, no awards recognition, etc. Maybe I'm wrong? But none of my friends know either. It's more than about not being discriminated against, it's about celebrating a unique and important part of local culture. Thank you. Hope to see this changed. I know the mayor is a personal ally but how about showing it in office. There are so many things that can be done to do better on this front.

Thank you for your UReport inquiry regarding the City's programming for the LGBT community. The City participates and supports many LGBTQ programs organized by various groups in the community both on and off of IU's campus. Bloomington Pride, Prism Youth, Pride Film Festival and PrideFest to name a few. The Bloomington Police Department added 2 LGBT liaisons in 2016. These officers conduct outreach and address specific issues that LGBT residents and visitors may experience. The commissions and recognitions you mentioned like Latino, Black , women, children were borne out of a need to address under served populations in our community. Members of those communities requested support and were able to show the need. The Mayor and City Council members at those times recognized the need and created commissions and/or positions to address the needs of those specific demographic groups. If in fact, there is a gap in our service to the LGBTQ community, we are certainly willing to consider ways to address them. Please feel free to give me a call or schedule a time to meet in person. I can be reached at 812.349.3560 or andersb@bloomington.in.gov.
