Biking & Walking:

Web Form: Hi, W 3rd just before Roselawn cemetary, there is an alley that leads to 4th St. It would be great to have a sign that faces W with a bike on it pointing toward 4th St. It would help bicyclists coming from Patterson addition and the soon-to-be affordable project at Walker, cycle on 4th St to town and IU rather than going the wrong way on 3rd Street. Thanks for this ureport.

Hi Cynthia, One of the issues that I didn't intend to encounter when I first heard your idea is that posting a sign for bicyclists who are traveling against traffic on a one-way street, would- in essence be opening the City to liability because they have provided a level of acceptability for what is not the intended use for the traffic pattern on that site. When I first looked into the matter, I didn't envision this as a barrier, but it makes sense given what I know now. I am told that the City is developing the Prospect Hill area to ensure better East-West pathways to encourage cyclists to use other means for navigating to their destinations. But, I know that doesn't remediate the issue at hand. Please know that I am thinking about the issue, and will continue to seek solutions to improve the safety and comfort for cyclists and remediate environments which have the potential for collisions.

Hi Cynthia! Thank you for reaching out to me. I have included your input on a list of ongoing ideas to implement in Bloomington. I am curious as the placement of the sign which you envision- do you mean to say that the sign will be for cyclists riding against traffic to be directed to turn right onto the alleyway east of Rose Hill Cemetery so as to allow them to continue headed East on 4th/ Kirkwood? Or, is that not right? Either way, I am intrigued and would be happy to chat about your idea with greater specification if you would like. Please feel free to email me (rickbeilm@bloomington) or call my office line (812.349.3529) to discuss as you are available. Looking forward on moving forward on this (puns!) with you. Sincerely, Mallory
