Dear Mr. Masters, The City of Bloomington Utilities uses chlorine to disinfect our treated drinking water to prevent contamination throughout the water distribution system. Chlorination is very important to ensure the water is free from harmful bacteria, viruses and pathogens. The Environmental Protection Agency requires chlorination but recommends the levels be maintained below 4 mg/l. The City of Bloomington maintains the chlorine level between 2 mg/l and 3 mg/l to ensure the entirety of the distribution system is protected for the safety of the community. The Utilities Laboratory field technicians perform tests daily at many points throughout the distribution system to ensure the chlorine level remains consistent. In November of this year the average chlorine level for these tests was 2.4 mg/l. The taste and smell thresholds differ from person to person, but for some people chlorine can be tasted and smelled at levels as low as 1 mg/l. If you are particularly sensitive to the taste and smell of chlorine, there are many in-home filtration systems that reduce chlorine taste and odor at the filter. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me, as we strive to maintain customer satisfaction while providing the safest possible water for our community. Sincerely, Tyler Steury Water Quality Coordinator (812) 349-3655 steuryt@bloomington.in.gov
