Traffic Suggestions:

Other: I would appreciate having someone who is in authority to come out to view traffic on East Third Street. But it shouldn't be the idiot who decided to turn Third Street into a 2-lane road. As traffic is moving east, we first have a race between the two lanes to merge into one by the time they reach Clarizz Blvd. Then, folks who attempt to access Third Street from any road between Clarizz and Smith Road have to wait anywhere from 2 to 20 minutes just to get into the lane of traffic. God forbid if they are making a left-hand turn! This silly traffic pattern has completely destroyed the continuity and flow of traffic, all so you could put bike lanes in. Now, I must admit that since they were put in I have seen two bicycles in the bike lanes - one traveling east and one traveling west. Way to go, planning crew! When can we expect the city to reverse this mistake??

This section of East Third Street is owned and operated by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), not the City. You are welcome to reach out to them to request a meeting with someone who is in authority. The City did coordinate with INDOT before the change was made, so I should let you know that the modification was not based on a decision to install bike lanes. The modification was primarily made to improve safety for people in motor vehicles, and it was made after studying potential impacts to traffic flow. National research shows significantly lower crash rates for streets configured as one lane in each direction with a center turn lane instead of two lanes in each direction. My understanding is that preliminary crash data from INDOT shows that crashes on East Third have indeed decreased. The bicycle lanes are certainly also considered a benefit, but they were only made possible because of the other desired safety improvements.

Neil - Thought this might be best for your team to respond to, given that this is an INDOT controlled portion of the road.
