Street Lights:

Other: The streets and sidewalks are very dark when the sun goes down. I am requesting street lamps are put in place to protect those walking home from campus or the bars. As the sun sets earlier, many students are leaving class or the library after dark. I also almost hit someone driving home who was crossing the street simply because I could not see them. I believe rates of reported instances would decrease simply due to being aware of our surrounding (people).

I have emailed the resident regarding her street light locations. I have placed her requests on DPWs Residential lighting location requests worksheet for future consideration. I have also provided my contact information in the event she would like to discuss our process in more detail.

Good Morning Erin, Thank you for contacting the City of Bloomington regarding new installations of street lights around E 6th St and E 12th St from campus to Walnut St. The Department of Public Works (DPW) is charged with street lighting within the public right of way. We leased street lights from Duke Energy and pay for the installation, energy usage and maintenance costs with Duke providing the maintenance services. Each year funding is set aside to install new street lights at locations requested from residents. The number of street lights installed annually is based upon the budget allocation our department receives. I have placed your requested locations on our Residential Street Lighting Request worksheet for future consideration. If you would like to discuss our process in more detail, please contact me by email at smithc@bloomington.in.gov or by phone at 812.349.3589. Best, Christina
