Accessibility Problem: Comment

Other: Responded... Hi Nick. First of all, thanks for submitting thisĀ uReport. The more folks that say something about it, the better. Second, I know this person and his mother is actually the chair of the Council for Community Accessibility. While neither have directly complained about this issue it has been on our radar as other people have seen him try to navigate that stretch of Smith Road. So I went out and did a full survey from 3rd to 10th Streets and reported every issue along that route. Then I participated in a discussion about it with the Engineering and Planning. It's not so easy to address this one because it's very narrow and can't be widened. It would also be fairly costly to do the whole route. But we have placed it on the sidewalk priority list that was submitted to Planning departments for their next round of sidewalk construction. We won't know how that very limited budget gets spent for a while, but sure hope it includes addressing this one. So that's where we stand on it. Fingers are crossed! It's folks like you who call this out that might make it happen sooner versus later. So thank you! Michael (staff liaison to the Council for Community Accessibility)

Hi there! We're working on the issue, but unfortunately this is an issue of poor planning that happened years ago. Situations like this are very costly and extensive to fix. We're working on it, but we can't build the sidewalks this space deserves.. yet.. If you have any questions or would like to discuss further, please feel free to contact me at rickbeilm@bloomington.in.gov. Thank you.

This one was submitted on the sidewalk mapping issue we did. Beth, Andrew, and others discussed it, too. So not sure what to do with the case, but reassigning to you at this point. Let me know if we should do something else, though. Thanks.

{"original":{"issueType_id":null,"responseMethod_id":null,"description":"I am a resident of Park Ridge East, my two children attend University Elementary. Each morning I take them by car down Smith rd to the school. One of their teachers is wheelchair bound, and I see him everyday without safe egress, as he uses his wheelchair to travel to work at University Elementary. There are not consistent handicap accessible cutouts from Morningside all the way to st rd 45. Additionally, there is no sidewalk from Deckard ln to Russell rd. This gentleman has to navigate on and off Smith lane, into car traffic, just to get to his place of employment. It should be noted he has even more difficulty when snow is not removed from the sidewalk or road. I'd appreciate it if someone would address this issue. This young man should not have to consider his safety and dignity on a daily basis just to access his place of work. Thank you, Nick Pejeau"},"updated":{"issueType_id":"5","responseMethod_id":"4","description":"Responded...\r\nHi Nick. First of all, thanks for submitting this\u00a0uReport.
