Biking & Walking:

Other: The 7th street bike lane is terrible. The curb greatly reduces bikes ability to avoid any danger in the bike lane. If a car turns into the bike lane, the biker can't avoid it due to the curb. I much prefer the old setup with bike lanes on each side of the street. I can't believe you wasted so much time and money to make a bike lane that's so much worse than before.

Hello, I apologize for my delay. Thank you for sharing your concern. Curbs do restrict possible movements. Overwhelmingly, the greatest danger to people bicycling is motor vehicles due to the large mass and speed differential. There is a lot of research available that demonstrates that protected (or curb-separated) bike lanes improve safety for bicyclists and for other users on the street. Research also shows that protected bike lanes and other separated facilities (like the B-Line Trail) are comfortable for a much larger portion of the population compared to a street with no bike lanes or a street with a striped bike lane. We have installed bollards on the bike lane at some intersections, and this has reduced the instances of vehicles in the bike lane. Here are a few resources that examine safety and protected bicycle lanes: Federal Highway Administration (FHWA): https://highways.dot.gov/safety/proven-safety-countermeasures/bicycle-lanes FHWA Proven Safety Countermeasures: Bicycle Lanes pdf: https://highways.dot.gov/sites/fhwa.dot.gov/files/Bicycle%20Lanes_508.pdf There is other research on this topic that supports protected bike lanes overall improve safety. Thank you, Beth Rosenbarger
