Thank you for your report regarding potentially installing crosswalks at the intersection of E. Maxwell Ln. and S. Sheridan Rd. Unfortunately, at this time we do not have current plans to paint or install a crosswalk at this location. The City of Bloomington, as well as the Department of Justice, have accessibility requirements which require that all new infrastructure must be accessible to all people. Newly created crosswalks must have accessible facilities at each point of the intersection. As it currently stands only the northwest corner of the Maxwell and Sheridan intersection has compliant accessible facilities. Additionally, Sheridan Dr. south of the Maxwell Ln. intersection has not been developed with sidewalks. This makes completing a compliant crosswalk difficult as the new crosswalk would terminate and the pedestrian would be required to traverse back onto the roadway in order to continue their journey.
That being said, we do understand the desire for the installation of a crosswalk at this intersection. We are hopeful the new stop signs at the intersection will provide additional safety to all users, and we will continue to the monitor the intersection moving forward. I have also added this request to a list of crosswalk requests that the City maintains. The City evaluates and prioritizes each of the requests on the list when funding becomes available.
Thank you again for your report. If you have any questions or need anything else please let me know. You can reach me at roblingr@bloomington.in.gov or 812-349-3459.
Thank you,
Ryan Robling
