From the reaearcher who removed the bird boxes:
"Hi Steve,
We removed a few boxes in that area after last summer because we've had a lot of issues with house sparrows - a non-native species of bird that kills native birds, including house wrens, bluebirds, and tree swallows. We retained the boxes in the northern stretch of Clear Creek because those boxes are farther from homes (and house sparrows do not prefer those boxes), so we haven't had as many issues with house sparrows them farther north. Unfortunately, many of the wren nests in that stretch closer to the That Rd Trailhead were unsuccessful, due to house sparrow interference (killing of adults and breaking eggs). We do have many more wren boxes is wooded areas around the county, far from homes, where we see many successful wren nests each year. We have also had some vandalism issues at boxes along Clear Creek (folks putting trash in boxes), so we prioritize our efforts towards the locations where native birds have had the most success and least interference (from humans and non-native birds)
I hope this helps,
Kim"
