Parks & Rec Programs:

Other: There is a new sign in the parking lot at the Butler Community Garden on a pile of rotted wood chips that has been aging for a couple of years. The sign warns that the material is infested with invasive jumping worms. If that's the case, shouldn't this be removed and disposed of? If the sign is vandalized or destroyed and the material is used, what is the danger to the community garden plots?

The plan is to solarize the jumping worms by covering them with black tarp. Since they are on asphalt there is no reason to believe they will be able to escape the area and this should kill the cocoons and living worms. If we try to transport the pile to the landfill there is a chance the bags could break and the worms could be exposed to other areas. This process should take place next week. Until then, garden staff are communicating with as many gardeners as possible as well as monitoring the signage.
