Other: Hello, I have a question about the city's pesticide program. I was wondering if fireflies have been taken into account, including how firefly hang out in grasses and, especially, how firefly larvae eat various insects and other creatures that might have ingested pesticides. Since fireflies are diminishing throughout the world for various reasons that seem to be mostly unknown (besides the obvious like habitat loss), pesticide use and light pollution are two theories for why based on current research. The pesticide-use theory links it to a slow diminishment, so still having fireflies doesn't mean pesticide use isn't an issue. I am grateful for the fireflies we have in our area, and this question has been on my mind for a while, so I wanted to check in and see what information you have. I appreciate your time. Thank you, Karisha Kirk

Karisha - thanks for your interest. The best place to start would be reviewing the city's Integrated Pest Management Plan on the website here (PDF): https://bloomington.in.gov/sites/default/files/2017-09/Bloomington%20Parks%20and%20Recreation%20Integrated%20Pest%20Management%20Plan.pdf We take pesticide application seriously. It's an important tool in combating invasive and damaging species but we recognize its use should be precise and intentional. If you have further questions or comments after reviewing, the best person to direct them to would be Joanna Sparks, the City's Urban Greenspace Manager. sparksj@bloomington.in.gov.
