City of Bloomington, Indiana

closed: Resolved #186457

City Performance:

Other: Can departments collaborate to inform a climate resiliency plan regarding tree canopy? Disadvantaged communities and areas on the heat map need to be addressed with priority and we need to find a way to incorporate this to private land. Can this become a council and administration priority? Thank you for consideration!

Thank you for your inquiry. I am currently working with community partners to write a Climate Resilience Plan for the City. Part of our efforts will be to collect surface level temperature data to determine which areas of our City have elevated temperatures. This information will be placed on our heat index map as well as our current tree canopy coverage. Tree plantings will be prioritized in low-income areas that also have elevated temperatures. Here is a link to our current heat index map that has tree canopy data from 2018 and satellite heat index data: https://bloomington.in.gov/arcgis/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=ea098b13a92d4b4487a66e14c3d10cf9. This map will be updated in 2024. Thank you, Shawn Miya Assistant Director of Sustainability

Shawn- I know we are working on this issue, and we're hoping you could articulate the city's efforts in this area. Thanks.
