uReport

City of Bloomington, Indiana

open #188343

Nuisance Lights:

Other: See #188316. Same issue with too-bright street lamp now at 12th/Washington. Please be mindful of property boundaries when it comes to illumination and not cast light on houses, etc. Also, with the bright lights up it makes it all the more convenient for dragsters to drive extremely fast down 12th Street at night. If the City's intention is ostensibly to make the street safer, why not install stop signs somewhere, such as at Lincoln and/or Grant? The frequency of vehicles that taking advantage of the lack of any speed controls (signs, etc.) and that drive 40-50mph down the street during the evenings, night, and early mornings is angering.

The street light in question has been reinstalled at the appropriate angle and height. Has the adjustment helped with the light trespass issue? If you could email me at smithc@bloomington.in.gov and let me know, I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Christina

Duke Energy is sending out a technician to measure the angle of the fixture. If the fixture is installed at the inappropriate angle, it may result in light trespass issues. If this is the case, the fixture will be adjusted. Duke is also looking into other possible solutions to dim LED fixture. I will update the uReport as we move through this process.

On 5/13/24, I looked at the street lighting fixtures at 12th & Washington and 12th & Lincoln. The fixtures have been changed out from a cobrahead to a micro LED fixture. I sent an email to my Duke Energy representative for additional information as to why these fixtures were changed out. I will update uReport when I hear back from Duke Energy.

The City leases lights from Duke Energy and pays for the ongoing energy usage and maintenance costs with Duke providing the maintenance services. I handle the leased street lights within the public right of way for the Department of Public Works. I will have to take a look at the fixture at the intersection of E 12th & N Washington as I have not authorized Duke to convert any existing lights along E 12th St. In regards to adding stop signs at that intersection, you may contact the City of Bloomington Engineering Department at 812.349.3913.
