Most likely a combination of Scale insects, honey dew and sooty mold, which are very common this time of year. Unfourtantly not a whole lot can be done, although it is unsightly, it is rarely fatal to the tree.

We are addressing the hole in the ground. Transferred to Haskell regarding the tree since we believe it probably needs looked at.

We checked this out and it looks like the tree is secreting sap and that is drawing in the bees. Can anything be done about this?
