The Duke Mural was designed to incorporate themes that were suggested by members of the public who participated in feedback workshops and an online survey open to all during summer 2023. The mural artists worked with a stakeholder group including members of the Bloomington Arts Commission and the neighborhoods near the mural site to create the design that was shared for public comment. Changes to the appearance of the cats and individuals represented in the mural were made in response to the public feedback.
The vertical Miller Showers gateway piece that was quashed during 2023 was not considered public art and the Bloomington Arts Commission was not involved in the soliciting of feedback for the project. The vertical design was halted because of the Board of Public Works's refusal to approve the street closures necessary to install the piece. As a result of this, the Parks Department redesigned the gateway and allocated $125,000 to the Bloomington Arts Commission to oversee the commission of a piece of public art in Miller Showers. The Commission will soon release a call for artists for the project. The design for the piece will be created in tandem with the public.
The proposal selected for the Hopewell Commons 1% for the Arts installation was chosen in alignment with public feedback. A press release regarding the selection will go out during the week of October 14.
