City of Bloomington, Indiana

closed: Submission Received #207017

Accessibility Problem:

Other: I’m beyond disappointed that the city is planning to replace the brick sidewalks downtown with more bricks. The ADA requires that sidewalks be firm, stable and slip resistant. Bricks are slipperier than concrete when wet, and bricks are prone to breaking or get dislodged. The city has not maintained its existing brick sidewalks well. Please reconsider this decision, and please consult your accessibility committee before you go forth with this misguided project. Safety should prevail over looks.

The project planned is a maintenance project to fix trip hazards and better secure the bricks for safety. Longer term plans for the future of Kirkwood would address what type of material would be used if the sidewalks were completely replaced.

Andrew, I assume this is more directed at you all since that appears to be where choices for materials get made. But let me know if not. Thanks. Michael
