The bicycle crossings where installed a little over a decade ago to allow bicyclist to cross the tracks perpendicularly. This was done for several reasons, most importantly to reduce the risk of bicycle wheels getting caught in the gaps between the tracks. If you feel comfortable staying in the existing bike lane, you are well within your rights to do so, but this diversion allows bicyclists to cross the tracks at a safer angle and not directly adjacent to an active roadway.
Hopefully that answers you question! If you have any others please feel free to reach out directly to me at [email protected].
