Biking & Walking:

Other: Hello, I regularly ride the bike lane along W 3rd and recently noticed that, at the intersection of W 3rd and the train tracks, the bike lane has been diverted onto the sidewalk. Could you please explain the reason for this diversion? Prior to the change, I continued through the intersection using the existing bike lane without issue, and I am trying to better understand the purpose and intent behind the new routing.

The bicycle crossings where installed a little over a decade ago to allow bicyclist to cross the tracks perpendicularly. This was done for several reasons, most importantly to reduce the risk of bicycle wheels getting caught in the gaps between the tracks. If you feel comfortable staying in the existing bike lane, you are well within your rights to do so, but this diversion allows bicyclists to cross the tracks at a safer angle and not directly adjacent to an active roadway. Hopefully that answers you question! If you have any others please feel free to reach out directly to me at [email protected].
