City of Bloomington, Indiana

open #209871

Nuisance Lights:

Other: I contacted the property manager and she said that this light could not be shielded or dimmed or adjusted for "safety". I would like to see if this is something that would constitute a light violation for the city so that it could be adjusted. I made a previous request about this light due to it shining into our bedroom window after a tree was cut down which had been blocking much of the light. Is there something that could be done?

Planning staff documented this noncompliant light. It is not properly shielded with the lighting element visible beyond the property line to the north. We will be issuing a Notice of Violation (NOV) Warning letter, establishing a compliance deadline to properly shield the lighting fixture. Please note that the light is not required to be shielded from the inside of the property which would include this apartment window--the City's outdoor lighting standards (as outlined in Bloomington Municipal Code Section 20.04.090) require the lighting elements be shielded from an observer at any property line.
