Bus Services (Bloomington Transit)

Case Date:
9/22/2017

Hello, I am finally writing here because of the immense and frankly overwhelming inadequacies of Bloomington Transit and what seems to be everyone working there above the position of bus driver. I have emailed them 4(!) times without any response. My primary concern is specifically with the 6 bus route, but it is rampant amongst many of the routes. I have consulted with multiple 6 bus drivers, who will remain anonymous, and discovered quite a bit. I didn't know that Bloomington's government had contracted the group that organizes Bloomington transit, and that seems to be the root of where the problem lies. Bloomington Transit has gone with apparently very little oversight for quite the time now, and I believe that time must come to an end. They are abusing their monopoly of student dependency and it is sickening. The 6 bus route has not been adjusted at all to deal with the new City Flats on Walnut which have completely overloaded the bus. This, combined with the 6 very large apartment complexes the 6 bus already directly served, plus the incompetence of whoever is in charge of dispatching the buses, has completely destroyed the route. WHY YOU SHOULD CARE: I know that money is the only way to make any sense to a government, so how would you like a massive lawsuit when one of these now CONSTANTLY overloaded buses crash? Everyday the bus is packed to the gils with people filled in way past the yellow line, which is entirely illegal. Bus drivers have told me that Bloomington Transit knows about this and by their lack of response are wholly complicit and will be liable in the end. That's on you. This is not only incredibly wrong on the grounds of being monopolistic and shrewd business practice, but it is now endangering human lives. This is not even to mention how abusive this is to the drivers, who are the real reason I'm writing you today. It is time to reign this in, before people are seriously hurt and the blood (and money owed) will be on your hands.

There is an issue with the Route 2 West Bloomington Transit Stop C at Crescent Rd and W 17th St. The residents at the Reserve at Chandler Glen have to cross a dangerous intersection to get to the bus stop. Due to the hills on either side, they are not able to see if there is ongoing traffic. Do you have options for resolving this issue?

Residents at Chandler Glen are concerned about the bus stop at 17th St. In order to reach the bus stop, they must cross a busy road that has poor visibility due to hills on either side. This is particularly difficult for the elderly or people with disabilities. Are there options for improving this bus stop? Thanks for your consideration.

Bus 555, on route 3E, almost ran into me at approximately 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2018. I was at the stop sign, leaving the parking lot as referenced above on the map. The bus took the left turn at an angle and did not stop. I put my car in reverse and the bus just missed my car by inches. My entire family was in the car with me. I have not seen bus driving this bad in quite some time. They need to be careful and take it slow. If they cannot make the turn, then let the other person turn so they have a wider angle. I'm not sure why a bus would be in a parking lot anyways--it's a poor place to put a bus stop if there is one. There's too much congestion in that parking lot especially.

As of 6 pm this evening, there were 4 Lime Scooters illegally parked in the bus shelter near Pete Ellis and Longview. (Photo attached). I first noticed the scooters there about 8:30 AM this morning. Lime employees freelance "chargers" who sign up up through their app to charge the scooters overnight at home and then place them in the morning. These scooters were likely placed by a new and under-trained charger. I reported the issue to Lime through their support system about 9 am and received a form response just a few minutes later that someone was being dispatched to retrieve the scooters. However, Lime did not keep their word and by the end of the work day, the scooters are still there. This evening I see one had had been knocked over--- probably by someone just trying to use the bus shelter as intended. I recommend impounding these scooters. Lime should know better than to allow their team to place the scooters in bus shelters and should at least keep their word to address issues like this probably when they arise! I'm on the Bicycle Pedestrian Safety Commission and we will be discussing new scooters as a topic at our meeting next Monday.

The 2 south route is being detoured and there is no information about it on the website or the app. How are people supposed to know that the bus will not arrive at their stop. The storm was three weeks ago, you should have information posted by now. Unacceptable.

At the bus stop on W 3rd St and S Westplex Ave there are homeless individuals who camp out at the bus stops; they have mattresses, trash, and needles around them. This situation makes it unsafe for other individuals trying to ride the bus as well as causing a disturbance to the neighboring businesses. I've contact the transportation department and filed a uReport but nothing changed.

Thank you for moving the bus stop north 100 ft out of the old bus egress places to places closer to real reasonable places nearer the sidewalks.

As required in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, a personal care attendant (PCA) does not pay a fare when accompanying a BT Access customer on a paratransit ride. However, Bloomington Transit reportedly requires that the PCA must pay a fare when accompanying a BT Access customer on a fixed-route bus. This fare policy creates unfortunate accessibility and financial burdens for BT Access customers. Bloomington Transit should revise this policy to go beyond the minimum and allow PCAs to ride for free on fixed route buses. Under Department of Transportation (DOT) Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations at 49 C.F.R. Section 37.131(c)(3), a personal care attendant (PCA) may not be charged a fare for complementary paratransit service. PCAs may be charged a fare on fixed route. While some transit systems go beyond the minimum requirements of the ADA and allow PCAs to ride for free, there is no requirement that they do so.
