Parks & Rec Programs

Hello, I love the new look and feel of your website, but I'm having trouble signing up for a fall Parks and Rec program. I got the brochure in the mail over the weekend, but any documentation for classes is either for summer or for fall 2017. When do you expect for this to be updated with fall 2018 information?

The web page for Frank Southern Ice Arena (link below) has an outdated link in the green button labeled "Visit Calendar." The link opens last year's calendar; it should open the calendar for the current year. https://bloomington.in.gov/parks/facilities/frank-southern

Hello, I couldn't find a more appropriate forum or contact information to use for this concern. I'm not sure if there are anymore movies in Bryan Park for the season, so if not maybe this could be applied to next year. I am wondering if the event could have a sort of rule for bringing lawn chairs. It would be really nice if folks bringing lawn/camp chairs could sit on one side and others with blankets and sitting on the ground could sit on another side. I was grateful to spend time with a friend watching a movie put on by the parks system. We came early and were prepared with blankets but ended up having to rearrange everything multiple times before and during the movie because of individuals coming in and setting up chairs in front of us, therefore blocking the screens. I know that there were plenty of people around us with the same issues. I think having a split down the middle of the lawn would be an easy way to make this a non-issue. (I am not including folks who need adaptive seating, as theirs' should always be a primary concern and I assume there is a place in front for accessible spots already in place.) Thank you so much for taking the time to read through my report and please pass it along to another individual who may be a better resource. Have a great day! Kam

Are there any tennis courts with free lights at night? Grew up near one that you pressed a button for thirty minutes of lights. Was awesome. Hope there is around here

Trivia at Switchyard I assume will have the bay doors open to help with airflow to keep teams safer from COVID? Thank you! Good location if so. If not planning on it, please open them.

I have two questions. 1. Can you reassure me that there will be programming in Bryan Park this spring/summer? I was disappointed to see that 90% of the winter programming is in Switchyard Park. I understand that it is new and exciting and has a lot of amenities but I really hope the other parks don’t get overlooked. 2. To whom do I speak about getting permission to install a temporary poetry hike in Winslow Woods? I would like to install cardboard signs on wooden stakes at half a dozen spots along the trail with a nature short poem on each. My initial thought was to do it for the Bloomington Montessori School (which my child attends) but I’d be happy to promote it more widely and it would certainly be available to anyone. Thank you.

I am a parent of three children participating in swim lessons at Bryan Park pool. I have several concerns with the lack of training and the ratios of children to instructors, especially in the level 1 class. The instructors are very nice, but clearly have not had instruction or training on how to conduct a swim class. My son in level one had about 14 kids in his class to one instructor. This is a safety issue in itself, but he also had very little instruction or even pool time during his lesson. He sat on the wall with his feet in the water 99% of the time other than when it was his turn to be dipped into the water for a few seconds. Additionally, in the toddler/guardian class, our poor instructor had just discovered she was teaching the class right before the class began. Needless to say, she was not prepared and did not have anything as far as activities pre-planned for the class. I understand that finding instructors may have been difficult this year, however, if a program is being offered especially ones that have a fee, I feel that there is an expectation for there to be some quality and training involved. Learning to swim is an extremely important skill that I would hope Parks and Rec would ensure to be a quality controlled program with many weeks prior training. Please consider implementing more staff and age and swim level specific training before swim sessions begin for these instructors in future sessions. Thank you for your time.

Bring back the arts to the city farmers market. Everything needs to be in a central location. I am not going to go out of my way twice a week to a Tuesday market and Saturday when I work on tuesdays. There’s a great need for Tuesday market, but it’s just for food. Please bring back the culture, life, art, and vibrancy to the original staple of the BTown farmers market. We want the vendors, food, and music/art all in one
