There has been a problem with people burning trash and yard waste in the near west side neighborhood nearly daily all summer and into this beginning of the fall season. The smoke often collects in some areas and lingers for hours causing a serious public health threat. Frequently the burning is conducted by a community of homeless people in the woods between W 8th and 9th Starts and the Monon trail just East of Adams Street, although therr may occasionally be other residents who are burning as well. Various neighbors have mad numerous calls to 911, but the problem persists. You may also reference the near west side neighhood association website to reference other complaints. While the fire department has come out to talk to the perpetrators numerous times, the City of Bloomington needs to find a permanent solution, since this is a serious public health problem that has been going on for a very long time, and sending the fire department does not resolve the problem.

Today I visited the Dollar Tree on the East side. I was there around 2pm. The store had multiple aisles overcrowded with boxes of stock needing unpacked. One aisle in general was completely full from one end to the other. This is the aisle in the photo. Other aisles had boxes on carts throughout and had a path to weave through. I understand that they are understaffed but this felt very unsafe. If there was a fire I do believe it could be difficult to get through the store to get out. It felt unsafe. I'm not sure if it is considered a fire hazard but in case it is I wanted to let you know about it.

I was burning leaves today, unaware of the city policy. The fire department came to my house, kindly asked me to extinguish the fire, and informed me about our policy. Even though I had done wrong, they were kind and helpful, which made it a pleasant learning experience for me. I love that in a town this size, people are so friendly and positive. Thank you city of Bloomington.

Hello, I own 1112 S Madison St. The electric supply line to my house runs overground, underneath the limbs of a large oak tree. This is a safety hazard as falling limbs may easily down the line and thus set my house on fire. I've been in communication with Duke energy since February in an attempt to have the supply line put underground. Duke says that ATT first needs to replace the utility pole where my supply line originates. They wouldn't touch the line before the pole is replaced. I have reported the issue to ATT and requested for the pole to be replaced more than two months ago. ATT is not doing anything about it. My contact person, Randy, originally said it would happen within two weeks, and when I called him again a month later he was surprised that it hadn't happened yet. Two weeks later, again nothing has happened. My contact people at Bryan at Duke (812 947 3282) and Randy at ATT (317 966 4152). What can I do when these corporations are unresponsive and not taking steps to replace the pole or put my supply line underground? It is a hazard and needs to be addressed, and I am frustrated by the lack of response or initiative by ATT and DUKE. Thanks, Vera Flocke

I live in the 600 block of west 7th Street. For the past two nights there has been an acrid smoke filling the air in our neighborhood. I am asthmatic and have had to use an emergency inhaler to breath. Can you find out who is burning what that is causing this terrible smoke and get them to stop it? Thank you!

My next door neighbor, Carl James, (at 703 W. 7th Street) burns trash and plastic and Styrofoam in his wood stove. The smoke is heavy, black and acrid. It is polluting the air. I think there must be regulations against burning trash like this. We have asked him not to do this and explained to him that it creates toxins in the air. A group of neighbors chipped in and bought him two ricks of wood recently, but his son took most of it and resold it. We do not know what else to do. Can someone from the City talk to him about this? To whom it may concern, I am not sure who I should address my question to, so please forward this question to the correct person. I am getting married on May 3, 2014. At the end of our ceremony, we would like to go outside and release paper lanterns to float off into the sky. It dawned on me that I should ensure this idea is permissible within city limits.
