Griffy is amazing, some of the best trail running around. What isn't amazing is the amount of trash in the parking lot. Some of it is old, some of it new. I was there after 8AM today, some it was probably left last night but regardless it could have been picked up right away this morning. Attendants didn't look busy, mostly getting tech neck. Cleaning up trash has got to be one of the easiest ways to make a positive impact, especially in a nature preserve. Thanks for your help.

There is a hollow maple tree on city property at the corner of East 11th Street and Walnut Street. There is currently an active bee hive in it. Given how close the tree is to houses in the area, the fact that the tree is hollow is cause for concern. If the tree and the bee hive could be assessed, that would be appreciated. Thank you!

We watched as a swarm of bees relocated themselves to a large Maple tree at the corner of 11th and Washington. We are not concerned having the bees around, and love the tree, but have some concern for the health of the tree. The bees entered the tree through several openings, so it is obviously hollow to some extent. I am asking if you have someone to assess the tree since it is on city property. Thank you.

I am writing to report a broken tree limb that poses a safety concern. It appears that the limb was damaged during the storm we experienced at the end of March 2023. The tree in question is located on city land outside of my property boundary at 1301 W. 8th Street in Bloomington. The broken limb is specifically situated at the intersection of Adams Street and 8th Street, where there is a significant amount of pedestrian traffic. The footpath visible in the attached picture is frequently used by pedestrians crossing from the sidewalk on Adams Street onto 8th Street. The presence of the broken tree limb in this area creates a potential safety hazard for pedestrians. Additionally, there is a slight concern that the broken limb obstructs the view of the Adams Street bridge for drivers turning right onto Adams Street from Fountain. This obstruction may affect the visibility of oncoming traffic, potentially leading to traffic incidents or delays. I kindly request that the relevant department of Bloomington takes immediate action to address this issue. It is crucial to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists in the area by removing the broken tree limb and conducting any necessary tree maintenance or inspection. We could use a trash receptacle or combo trash/recycling on the dam side of Griffy Lake. This area gets quite a bit of usage during the warm months and I find a lot of bottles and cans, fishing materials, and dog waste in the area. Since the area is already being mowed on a regular basis, I would imagine it would be fairly easy for the crew to empty the bin at the same time.

We hope these comments will fall on fertile ground resolving a vacant feeling at the Farmer's Market. For many years, Medicare for All Indiana Bloomington, formerly known as Hoosiers for a Commonsense Health Plan, has had a booth in Information Alley, paying ahead for the whole season. Our booth has been well attended by market patrons by having many deep and important conversations about healthcare with people who live in the Bloomington area, other regions around Indiana, the US, and indeed, international students and visitors. COVID restricted our being at the market. Last year, the days the market was open for Information Alley, it frequently rained, so we cancelled several times. Today was our first day back for 2023. Information Alley felt like a ghost town. No food vendors and only two other booths, the Dems and the ballet students. What was missing was the spirit of a bustling market with people buying bread, coffee, tea, pastries, savory eggs and tamales. When we asked about the empty food area, we were told that it's the vendor fees keeping vendors out. We've been hearing this for many years. The popularity of the food vendors goes hand in hand with the market growers. Market growers we spoke with this morning expressed the same attitude. Each group, the food vendors and market growers, support the other in bringing people to the market. If in fact, it's the fee, then we believe that the decision is penny wise and pound foolish from what we witnessed today. The market is dull without the bustling food vendor area. The identity of Bloomington having a thriving farmers market is an asset to the entire community. We're curious just how much money is involved with fees for the food vendors. Are they being asked to subsidize the market without setting up in the heart of the market with covered space? How much do the total fees collected from food vendors add to the Parks and Recreation budget? And is the fee worth the alienation of food vendors in the long run? The park ridge east baseball field is in need of repair. Request the infield be groomed and holes filled in. Water pools at the home plate. The backstop fence also needs to be secured so that balls cannot roll under it and into the street.
