Biking & Walking

High St & Wimbleton Ln

Case Date:
8/16/2025

Near miss. During the morning, walk to school, kids were crossing high Street around 8:35 AM, there’s a crossing guard there who triggered the crosswalk lights, and stood in the middle of the road with his stop sign, but a car approaching from the north did not stop, and drove through the crosswalk around 25 to 30 mph. Talking with the cross guard, this happens quite often, because it is at the bottom of a hill with limited visibility. I highly recommend putting a stop sign at that intersection similar to everywhere else on high Street.

Accessibility Problem

Brick sidewalk on Kirkwood

Case Date:
8/15/2025

The ADA requires that sidewalks be firm, stable and slip-resistant. Numerous bricks that make up the downtown sidewalk are loose or missing. I saw an older woman trip on one of these in front of Fountain Square this week. I helped her up and when her husband took her to the ER because she may have broken her ankle. When it’s wet, these sidewalks are slippery than concrete sidewalks. They look nice but they are hazardous. At the least, the city needs to do a better job of maintaining them. Thank you.

Excessive Growth

401 E 8th ST

Not sure which category this belongs under. The grass-cutters for this property and the one directly to the north and also the Grant Street Inn to the south routinely blow grass cuttings into the street. Sometimes, there is so much that it creates a cycling hazard, and then when the rain washes it all into the storm sewer grates and clogs them, temporary lakes form. Are the any regulations relating to the levying of fines to careless people who dump yard waste (grass, leaves, etc.) in the street?

Street Trees

1022 E Azalea LN

Case Date:
8/17/2025

A large branch high in the city oak tree in front of this address is dead and has partially fallen off the tree. All the leaves are dead and a different color so it is easy to identify. The branch is still attached, however, and could fall during a storm or high winds onto cars that often park under the tree. Could the city remove the branch to limit potential destruction of property in the future?

Blocked Street

Henderson St and Wylie Farm Rd

Case Date:
8/15/2025

Every school day around 2:30 PM to 2:50 PM, there is a line of traffic parked on each side of Wylie Farm Road, almost all the way to the intersection of Henderson. With cars parked on each side, it reduces the road to one usable lane. Several times each day (including today) traffic going in either direction will have to wait to allow cars through single file. On today’s occasion, I was halfway through the line of cars when a truck turned at the intersection and proceeded to frustratedly drive-through, forcing a near collision. Anyway, this has been going on for years and it’s surprising that there have not been accidents here. It is worth taking a look at because the parking seems unnecessary and done just as a convenience for parents picking up their kids from South high school.
