There’s a woman who sleeps and/ or stays under the old Small Favors back entrance who routinely shouts at passersby all day, every day. For years now. She definitely needs help of some sort, but those of us who love or work down here are pretty fed up.
Subject: Concern About Clogged Storm Drains on 1st Street Dear Bloomington Town Official, I am reaching out regarding an ongoing issue with leaves clogging the above-ground grated storm drains along 1st Street, between Henderson and Grant Streets. I previously reported this concern a few weeks ago, but the problem has reappeared due to the continued accumulation of leaves. The situation seems to have worsened following Bloomington's policy change to no longer collect unbagged leaves. As a result, many residents are no longer raking, and the town has become noticeably untidy. These clogged drains pose a significant risk of flooding when it rains, creating potential hazards for our community. I kindly ask for prompt attention to clear these drains and consider ways to address the broader issue of leaf accumulation to maintain the town’s cleanliness and prevent future drainage problems. We own a business building next to Kinser Flats. During covid, business slowed down and people had to work from home. The people that still went to the office became uncomfortable there due to the fighting next door, gun fire, profanity, vagrant people who would be passed out on the back deck, human waste, needles in the yard and on deck, random junk cars in the parking lot, zombie like people with camp sites set up in the yard and huge amounts of trash. We have had to replace Hvac (5 units) 2 times due to vandalism and had a concrete block thrown through a window, another window cracked, lots of broken outdoor furnishings, torn up masonry and lawn equipment stolen from shed that was also completely torn down. As a result of all of this, the value of the property has gone down significantly. We would like to get back into the building to do business and would like help/cooperation with the city and the people running Kinser Flats to make this possible. This building was a beautiful and safe place to work and do business before Kinser Flats and now it is unsafe and impossible upkeep. Please help!!!!!!!!!! Lucinda Farkas Owner, 441 W Gourley Pike
There appears to be a small homeless camp in the backyard behind the unoccupied house with a tent and two abandoned vehicles. The house itself has been vacant for many years and none of the people staying there seem to be entering the home. A relative of the people who own the house, a man named Bob, began staying in the backyard over a year ago, but he has since left and other people are now staying there in his absence. Recently, neighbors have found human feces and needles in their yard nearby, creating sanitary concerns, as well as heard a woman yelling in what sounded like distress at night. Outreach to the family of the property owner has not been successful so far, so I’m hoping someone could please look into this situation. Thank you!
Homeless living behind unoccupied home with trash and fires. One person named Bob related to the property owner is allowed to camp there but in his absence others have taken up living behind home. Neighbors are now complaining. Mike Harper (812-360-5782) related to the absentee owner occasionally cuts the grass.
Two pianos are at the intersection of S. Swain and 2nd Street and should be removed.
There are people doing drugs and sleeping in the mini barn in back of the empty house. I’m afraid and the police wouldn’t come out because I don’t own the property.
This specific incident involved a Lime scooter, but I urge you to please ban ALL motorized scooters from Bloomington. My family and I were just coming back from the airport yesterday when we saw a young woman collide head-first into a car in cross-traffic (without a helmet because of course, none of these scooters come with helmets) because her brake stopped working. This was no one's fault but the manufacturers'. But given how much they make, I'm doubtful much will come out of it if she were to take legal action. There have been so many accidents (some fatal, as you know) in so many cities, including ours, due to these companies dumping scooter after scooter onto seemingly every busy sidewalk, and it is completely within your control to ban them here--after all, Indianapolis did. I would like to know your reasons for allowing them to continue to be used in Bloomington when we know how dangerous they have and will continue to be, as long as they are on the streets.. Just how many more accidents must we see and hear about until something concrete is done?

More so after city employee David Parkhurst responded to my petitions as unfounded stating such water treatments standards are harmless and there is no difference between Calcium v/s Sodium fluoride. Hi there, I have noticed a large increase in homeless activity in Bloomington this year. In the past, homeless individuals have largely remained in Seminary Park. Now, I see them camped in the park by Hartzell’s on Kirkwood, up by the square further north on Walnut, and even in Bryan Park. Homelessness is a complex problem and individuals in this situation face unfathomable challenges, but many of my peers and I feel their presence in social areas of Bloomington has negatively impacted the safety and cleanliness of the city. Just yesterday, I witnessed a homeless man harass a girl sitting in Brother’s Bar and Grill by slapping the window as if he was slapping her bottom through the window. It made me feel unsafe in my Bloomington home. Similarly, the park near Hartzell’s on Kirkwood is no longer an inviting place to eat ice cream with friends due to the mess left by homeless populations in this area. I am so sorry for their situation and challenges they face, but I do not want the homeless epidemic to impact the value and vibrance of the many lovely green spaces in Bloomington. For these reasons, I wanted to express my concerns about the spread of homelessness in Bloomington this past year and implore you to seek solutions for the issue. I am not an expert in social services or rehabilitation, so I am not sure if there are solutions to this problem, but I hope the city of Bloomington will take my concerns to heart to both help the homeless and improve the safety and well-being of Bloomington.
