Description

PURPOSE: The Human Rights Commission is designed to enforce Bloomington's Human Rights Ordinance in a fair and timely manner, to educate community members about their rights and responsibilities under various civil rights laws, to raise awareness on all human rights issues, to ensure that contractors and subcontractors on city jobs pay employees applicable common wages, to ensure that the City, as an employer, governmental entity and provider of public accommodations, complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and to provide the community with information about the ADA.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Members of the Human Rights Commission shall be representative of the community and shall be city residents.

DUTIES: The commission shall have the following powers and duties:

(1)To create subcommittees and advisory committees as in its judgment will aid in effectuating the purpose of this section. (2)To issue such publications and such results of investigation and research as in its judgment will tend to minimize or eliminate discrimination because of race, religion, color, sex, national origin, ancestry or disability.

The staff of the Bloomington Human Rights Commission gives talks on a variety of human rights-related topics, including fair employment and fair housing practices, sexual harassment, affirmative action and hate incidents. Meeting Schedule

This commission typically meets the 4th Monday of the month at 5:30pm in the McCloskey conference room.
