Alice is a Courtesy Listing and is not housed at the Animal Shelter. Please note that the City of Bloomington Animal Care & Control accepts no responsibility for this pet. Potential adopters are responsible for communicating directly with the pet's guardian. Alice is a large dog that needs a lot play time. I haven’t had her around small children before, but once she’s used to a person, she’s sweet and playful. She’s a very anxious dog, and very energetic. When she feels intimidated by new people, she may bite them on the butt in an effort to get them to sit down. We believe she was a herding dog in a past life. While we were able to get her to a point of trust with us and comfort, we haven’t been able to train her frequently enough due to conflicting schedules. She needs a fenced in backyard, not shared by anyone, or a nice bit of land and to learn the perimeter. She is a runner, and freaks out on walks when she sees other animals or strangers. She is NOT FRIENDLY with other new dogs. She has been able to get used to my cats, but since she is a big dog, it comes off as a little terrifying for them initially. As she likes to run after the cats. She’s never bitten my cat though. It will be a learning curve when she finds her new home. Because she has bitten people on the butt before, it’s very important she goes somewhere she can get energy out without people disturbing her (fenced in yard or large property to walk). She’s also a great alert dog. Will bark at any car door shutting, car locking, person lurking by window or door. While I don’t want her to be treated as a guard dog, she needs emotional rehabilitation through friendship and training, this is just how she came and something we can’t break. She takes medication, the medication is affordable. A 30 day supply without insurance is $13 at Royer vet in person. When she needs to potty she won’t bark at the door or scratch the door. She’ll just stare at you with a look on her face, like a toddler trying to hold it in really bad but more quiet. Or she’ll hyperventilate on your leg waiting for you to notice it’s time to go. To get her to take the medicine, I get a jar of crunchy organic off brand peanut butter, crunch hides the texture of the pill, always stir it really good and keep it refrigerated. One scoop on top of her dinner bowl so she’ll eat it first. It also helps her eat the rest of her food in general. Refrigerate the peanut butter to avoid diarrhea. I get the Kroger brand usually. She’ll come with her harnesses, leash, bowls, whatever medications she has left, whatever toys she hasn’t destroyed, etc. I’m not asking for any fees, I just need someone to meet the requirements that can take on a big responsibility. She needs a lot of time and compassion.
