City of Bloomington, Indiana

closed: Resolved #159222

Other: Complaint

Email: Stop sign issue. The stops signs on Rogers (intersection with Dodds) are not apparent enough, so people have a tenancy of blowing through the four way intersection. The suggestion is a red reflective strip on the sign pole, or another way of making the stop signs more visible in order to improve safety at the intersection.

An investigation of this intersection, including visual inspection and crash data, was performed on 6/2/2017. The information was shared with Traffic Engineers who then decided pavement marking refreshing and tree trimming would help this intersection. A notice of violation letter was sent and the property owners who trimmed their trees, abating the violation on (6/20/2017). The stopping sight distance for the Stop sign on the SW corner of Dodds and Rogers is now adequate. Street Department has been informed about the concern and the need to refresh pavement markings. They will refresh the stop bars and crosswalks as time permits. I informed the constituent via email about improvements being made.

I evaluated this intersection on 6/2/2017. Pavement markings for stop bars and crosswalks are dull to non existent. The engineers feel refreshing those will help the visibility and define it as a 4-way stop intersection. I will contact street department about refreshing the paint. All stop signs have adequate stopping sight distance visibility except the sign located on the west leg of the intersection on Dodds which is obstructed by low hanging tree limbs. I will contact the property owner about trimming the limbs at this location. I will contact the constituent via email about progress on this report.
