Street Lights:

Other: Hello, I'm a second-year tenant of a house on S Woodlawn Ave. The walk home at night is very dangerous because there are no street lights once you get south of Atwater Ave. As a larger man, I luckily do not have to worry as much as about being abducted by any predators. However, I still worry about getting struck by a car because of the lack of visibility on the streets and sidewalks. We have guests that are women that fear coming to our house at night because of how dark the street gets and they could easily be abducted in the dark. My roommates and I often find ourselves having to walk guests to Atwater for them to feel safe. It is a public safety issue and I'm requesting that street lights are installed on Woodlawn Ave for a minimum of 5 blocks south of Atwater. Woodlawn is a highly trafficked area not only by cars, but pedestrians too. I'm a policy analysis major and would love to be involved in any research or implementation needed to solve this issue. Please reach out with any decision made! Thank you.

I have placed Mr. Miller's street lights requests on DPW's request worksheet for future consideration. I have sent him an email and explained our additional lighting process and gave him my contact information in the event he would like to discuss this matter in detail.

Mr. Miller, Thank you for your street lighting request. The Department of Public Works (DPW) handles the City's street lights within the City's public right-of-way. The City also leases lights through Duke Energy and pays for the installation, energy, and maintenance costs with Duke Energy providing the maintenance services. Each year DPW installs new street lights based upon residential location requests which is dependent upon available funding. I will place your request on our list for future consideration. All of the funding allocation for residential request additional lighting has been spent for 2021. So, I will evaluate the area at the beginning of 2022. There isn't sufficient right-of-way to install new poles on S Woodlawn Ave. Within the parameters of your request area, the City's right-of-way ends at the back edge of the existing sidewalks. However, I can place lighting fixtures at intersections on existing wooden poles if they belong to Duke Energy. I will be more than happy to scheduled a phone call or virtual meeting with you to discuss our lighting process and/or answer any questions you might have. You can email me directly at smithc@bloomington.in.gov or by phone at 812-349-3589. Best, Christina
