City of Bloomington, Indiana

closed: Submission Received #211111

City Performance:

Other: Please see the numerous ureports regarding reckless kids on electric bikes on the B line. We need a more thorough response than “tell your city counselor.“ This is a dangerous situation and you all are not taking it seriously. Thank you.

Thank you for your message. We are working on a policy and researching how other cities are handling this. We are very aware of the problem and trying to determine how to set local code and enforcement in ways that are effective. Many communities are struggling with the issues, which include that these bikes are not registered (so we don't have, for example, a "license plate" to track); they are often modified in ways that make it difficult to determine where they fall in the law on the spectrum between bike, ebike, and motor bike; and they are often ridden by juveniles who may make dangerous decisions if "chased" for enforcement. Thank you for your concern! Legislation will be forthcoming.
