Sewer Problems (Storm Sewers)
408 North Morton Street
- Case Date:
- 8/7/2014
We are expecting several storms this week. Last time we experienced heavy storms, the storm drains around our building were blocked and heavy flooding occurred. Matt Frey asked me to contact someone and ask if our storm drains could please be checked for blockage asap so we do not experience flooding this week.
Thanks,
Aly

This is in reference to a prior case submission (#913401) - the prior service request was closed and listed as the property owner's responsibility but the case history for the location shows that in 2014 the same issue was submitted by my former neighbor and the city did resolve the issue with the storm drain being blocked.

According to CBU records, the ditch at this location is private property, so maintenance is the responsibility of the property owner, or in some cases a neighborhood group/HOA. Thank you.

There are at least 3 steel culverts that have rusted through creating a sharp object hazard along the south side of E Dodds St along the 300, 400 and 500 block. My concern is there are children that play in this residential area and the rusted crevasses could act as a trap for small limbs of children or pets.
The culverts are corrugated steel and all seem to be suffering from rust fatigue along the top edge.
Thank you for the consideration of replacing these culverts.

Thank you Kathleen for updating ticket 175079.
This is a follow-up to your update. I do desire to remain anonymous on ureport system.
These storm sewers have long been functionally abandoned and really do not act as "ditches" anymore. In fact some of them seem to not have an inlet. It was not so much that that I though they should be "clean out" but more like the sharp metal hazard should be addressed. The exposed tops of at least three culverts have rusted through creating what I consider "sharp rusty hazards". Replacing those culverts (or repairing the rusty sections) is what I was thinking. Or maybe rotating them 180 degrees so the rusty part is down? My concern with the cleanout solution is the neighbors might not like the excavation unless the hazards are removed. I do not think anyone is complaining about the fact the culverts might not be doing much to handle water run off. Again I just walk my dog along Dodds and that is when I spotted the harzards. I do not live at these residences. Thank you again for the consideration.

A tree is growing in this drain. Also, there is erosion around the concrete on the north (uphill) side.

The catch basin on the west side of the street just north of where the Indiana Rail Road crosses Pete Ellis Drive seems to be plugged somewhere underneath the road. Debris doesn’t pile up on the grate the way it used to, and the large puddle I observed after this afternoon’s thunderstorm was draining only slowly. Again, an accumulation of debris was not the problem.

Across the street, there is a drain that sends water along the southern border of my property to Clear Creek. This drain has not been maintained and is partially blocked. The ditch that carries the water yo Clear Creek, is also full of sediment. Please call me. Thank you.
