Biking & Walking

900-998 North Fess Avenue

Case Date:
9/10/2017

Fess is a good bike route, but the pavement in this area is so deteriorated that it is dangerous. This is especially true under the railroad overpass because the sudden change from light to shadow makes it almost impossible to see the defects in the pavement.

Caller has witnessed many people ignoring the stop sign at the corner of Clarizz and Buick Cadillac Dr. Because some children cross at that intersection walking to Binford-Rogers, she wonders about putting in a pedestrian crossing signal or crosswalk.

B-Line Trl

Case Date:

I wasn't sure what category to put this in... do city employees know that the B-Line is a pedestrian and bike path? Because a city truck (actual full sized truck, not a parks gator) was just driving north on the b-line (i saw near Dodds). I figured it was a student or freshman parent and was going to stop them and then it ended up being a city vehicle. It was definitely on purpose because she had the opportunity to turn onto Dodds. Can even our B-Line not be safe from cars?

1. Many of our faculty, staff and students (as well as others) have to cross 10th street to get to their parking lots behind Geology or the Fee Lane garage. Although there is a pedestrian crossing, most cars do not stop and it is difficult to cross. Also, when the buses are stopped, cars often pass on the left and come very close to hitting us. This has happened to me and many others many times. I was almost hit again yesterday. I believe that if the zone was better marked on the road or around the road and/or had flashing lights like some others around the campus, cars would be more prone to slow down and respect the rules. Last year, I contacted the IU Police Dept. who informed me that the street belonged to the city of Bloomington and that they would mention it to them. However, I never heard another word from them and the zone remains dangerous. Is there something that the school can do before someone gets seriously injured? We would all be very grateful

East 7th Street

Case Date:
8/9/2017

In the transition from Longview Ave. to E. 7th St., the asphalt multi-use lane turns into a double-wide cement sidewalk. I've always stayed on the path because it links directly to the underpass at the bridge and seems and extension of the bike path. But today someone told me, "Get off the sidewalk idiot!" I pride myself on following the rules of bicycling. AQm I right or wrong to be using that stretch of cement? Also, Smith Road between 3rd St. and Moore's Pike is a disaster for bicyclists--way too narrow to safely bike on the road, but only a cement sidewalk on the west side, which then vanishes to become a multi-use path on the WEST side of the road, which then vanishes again at the corner of Moore's Pike to become a sidewalk traveling west. How can my kids safely ride their bikes down Smith Road!?

Hi - I feel like the city needs to issue a warning to cyclists to take extra precautions when locking up their bike. On Monday around 11am, my $1200 bike was stripped of all of its parts that were not locked to the bike rack. This happened right outside my office in a somewhat busy parking lot, in downtown Bloomington, in broad daylight. From the security footage it took the person about 20 minutes. A police report was filed and the officer mentioned he'd seen similar cases recently. After posting about this on social media, I've now heard numerous cases of bikes either being stripped completely or partially during the day at various spots downtown over the past couple weeks. Had there been any media or warnings issued, I would have certainly brought my bike into my office, rather than risk losing most of it. I realize it's just a possession (and not a life) and can be replaced, but given that this seems to be a growing trend, a warning and increased awareness would be helpful.
