Potholes, Other Street Repair

Case Date:
9/3/2015

Greetings, I couldn't get the mayor to comment directly on the following via the Ask the Mayor program on WFIU, perhaps your dept can comment? Downtown and near downtown main streets are becoming a maze of hazardous patched sections, uneven pavement, road projects without final paving (roundabout at Arlington Road) and wear and tear that is not being attended to. I have my doubts that the Street Dept is at fault here but here is what I have observed as a lifelong resident who notices things. Due to the recent explosion of downtown building, contractors tear up our downtown streets, often major thoroughfares in order to connect to utilities, etc. They further damage the street with huge pieces of machinery needed for the construction. They finish the project and then cheap out on really repairing the damage to the street that was often in fine condition prior to them tearing it up. Then all the citizens have is a street that will kill their tires, struts and rattle their teeth as well as possibly causing accidents. They leave it up to the city to spend the huge $$$ to really fix the road correctly. The contractors and builders have no right to destroy our streets that WE pay taxes to keep in excellent condition. We should not have to wait for a scheduled road project when the road in question carries thousands of cars and other vehicles a day. This type of damage is very obvious at the northern apex of Walnut and College Avenues. Just patching the potholes and bumps and uneven surfaces is NOT enough. It seems that the streets that are getting paved and kept in the best condition in Bloomington are those who live in exclusive additions off these roads and all they had to do was to jiggle the ringer on the mayor’s cell phone and voila! the street is smooth as a baby’s bottom. Could you comment on my observations and what can be done?

Hello, my child is a student at Ivy Tech Bloomington and has classes in two Ivy Tech locations that are across the street from each other on Liberty Dr. The concern is that she (and many students who don't have cars) must cross Liberty Dr at very busy times during the day to reach her next class, changing buildings. Please ensure there is School signage and a stop sign on Liberty Drive across the 2 Ivy Tech buildings so that the pedestrians/students can safely cross Liberty Dr when attending classes. The addresses of the 2 buildings are 1907 Liberty Dr, Bloomington, IN 47403 and 2100 Liberty Dr, Bloomington, IN 47403. Thank you.

Please put a light at the intersection of rockport and country club. The amount of east-west traffic on country club is far superior to the north-south traffic on rockport and traffic is backed up 30-50 cars every morning and every evening.

There is a big ditch that has developed over the last year that needs to be fix in the front of my house(1008 East Thornton Drive) It is on the main street(Thornton Drive)Can you please have someone out to fix it soon? With winter close it will be extra dangerous to park there.I think it just needs to be filled in with gravel. There is not a lot of parking available there because of the ditch. Thanks Malissia Forest

Biking & Walking

Case Date:

I am writing to express my concern over the design of the Third street corridor, from just east of Jordan St. running east to High St. As a daily commuter cyclist, I am concerned about the design of the bike and bus lanes on the north side of Third St. There is no safe way to ride east from the university, on Third St or Atwater. Obviously the north bike lane allows safe passage into the university but the width of the lane on Third St. means that as a cyclist heading east, cars are backed up behind me until they can pass.

The north side of Winslow road at High St, after the second roundabout heading west from State Raod 446, has numerous missing pieces of sidewalk. It is a clear danger to drivers of Winslow Road and the many walkers, joggers and cylist.
