Traffic Signals
411 Indiana 45 46 Bypass
- Case Date:
- 9/9/2025
The new sensor traffic lights for north/south traffic at the Dunn/Hwy 45 intersection do not sense bicycles. Because the lights differentiate between the left turn and straight lanes, and most traffic is turning left onto the bypass (in both directions) there are often few cars going straight and the straight green light is often not activated - it remains red and only the left turn green lights are activated. Unfortunately there are not good alternative options for bikers, since there are no bike lanes or paths north of the bypass, so bikes must share the driving lanes with cars up to that point. Using the light is the most reasonable approach for cyclists and bike commuters, as there is no other safe access to get to city neighborhoods north of the bypass.

Cars turning right onto the bypass from Dunn Street rarely if ever look to the right to see if a pedestrian is crossing. Please make this intersection "No Turn On Red" and also add a pedestrian delay so the intersection can be safely crossed.

I live in Blue Ridge on the north side of town and cross the Dunn/45-46 intersection daily to get to work. This intersection not only has high traffic due to daily Bloomington traffic, but also has high traffic with visitors for game days and other IU events. This intersection needs to be reworked to help with traffic flow and safety. (1) Driving south through the intersection on Dunn there is only a green light (no green arrow or yellow yield arrow like other traffic signs around town.) People frequently turn left immediately on green without yielding, causing several near accidents (happened to me twice just this week.) (2) Going northbound on Dunn -- there are 3 lanes - 1 to turn left, 1 to go straight onto North Dunn, and 1 to turn right. Although there is a sign that says turn left, almost daily people are turning left from the "straight traffic" lane, again causing issues with traffic and safety. I believe there needs to be a sign that says "straight ahead only" -- similar to the signs on South Walnut near Kroger/Seminary Square. As someone who drives this intersection daily, I am always prepared for someone to incorrectly cross through these intersections, but for 90% of people who do not, especially people going to/from IU on visits and other events and/or are from out of town, this is extremely unsafe.

It would be great if parking enforcement could come around some on big weekends. Most weekends cars are parked to intrude slightly on my drive, clearly parked in the visible yellow paint. It's mostly only annoying but does reduce visibility and can make it tricky for me to back out. Thanks!
