Animal Control & Neglected Pets

Case Date:
3/30/2018

A neighborhood deer died of natural causes (disease?) this past Monday March 26th on the sidewalk on the side of my house at 425 E Dodds St. We immediately called the city to report it and were told someone could come remove it on Tuesday or Wednesday. We called again Wednesday late afternoon and were told someone would probably come Thursday to remove it. It is now Friday evening, March 30th, and no one has come or contacted me. The deer is now decaying and something is starting to eat it at night. As the Bryan Park neighborhood have homes quite close together, I'm afraid the smell will start to bother the neighbor, and I'm afraid that the dead animal is becoming a health hazard and will spread disease. I was told when I called on Wednesday no one had come to remove it yet because the vehicle that is typically used was out of service, but that it would probably be back in service on Thursday. If the vehicle is not yet back in service, the city should hire a contractor to come remove the deer - I would have done so myself at the beginning of the week if I had known it was going to be left rotting all week. Thanks for your assistance, and for everyone's peace of mind I have not attached a picture.

From Elm Heights listserve emails: The dog you are describing belongs to the people in the red house there on Southdowns in the block between Manor and Hawthorne. I saw the woman let the dog out, which she does every day. Then it runs all over the neighborhood, stops traffic, interferes with and barks at other dogs, and craps wherever it wants. I called animal control, but she took it in before they got there. A bad situation for the dog and all the rest of us. Debbie Collins A fairly calm older dog that seems to be part German Shepherd (but ears were not upright) is wandering around on Southdowns now (I saw her at 8:10 a.m.), 1200 block approx., a female I think. It's wearing an old cloth collar but no tags. I didn't get a photo, and a dog walker seems to have called someone (shelter? vet?), may have gone back looking for her after taking his own dog home. I didn't have a leash and couldn't capture her, and this other walker may have done so, but in case he doesn't notify the ListServe, I'm letting folks know...the dog was calmly exploring lawns, went into some of the dead-ends off Southdowns... -- Beau Vallance

Hi Virgil, I wanted to follow up with an email you forwarded to yourself today. The issue wasn't just a slight sprained ankle. Robin BROKE her ankle which required 2 weeks of a cast and 2-3 months of an air cast. We had to cancel a prepaid trip to CA because of this incident with a deer that would not have been the case if there were no aggressive deer in Bloomington. I know this might seem like a slight case to you, but it is huge for us. Once again, we have health insurance, but if we didn't...it would have been a huge Emergency Room expense, Orthopedic doctor expense x 3 and physical therapy. Missed time from work, etc. This isn't just a slight matter and I am sure if it had happened to someone else in the city it might have been looked at a little more seriously. The owners before us had been fighting the deer for years before they sold the house to us and now we are fighting the deer issue. Once again, will it take a death of a child (which I am sure will happen) before the city will do something about the urban deer problem? We have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars trying to have a decent garden and fighting these deer and every year their population keeps growing and doing more havoc to the city of Bloomington's resident's gardens as well as the danger they cause and nothing gets done about it.
