City Commission on the Status of Women Sponsors Leadership Event

Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Women is holding a leadership development event Monday, March 30, from 5 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at City Hall Showers Building, 401 N. Morton Street. The theme for the event is Peace Work, Green Work, Women's Work, and it is part of the National Women's History Project 2009 initiative, Women Taking the Lead to Save our Planet.

The activities will begin with a reception for participants to learn about opportunities with the City of Bloomington Boards and Commissions and other local agencies. The evening's agenda also will include an award presentation by the 2009 Emerging Leader, Melissa Britton; a keynote address by Betty Cockrum, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Indiana; and breakout workshops focusing on women involvement in environmental affairs.

Workshops include:

• "Peace Work" - Workshop led by Bobbie Wrenn Banks, Founder of Pathways to Peace and former National President of WAND

• "Green Work" - Panel discussion featuring local environmental advocates and activists: Lucille Bertuccio (moderator), Cynthia Shultz, Maggie Sullivan and Christine Glaser

• "Women's Work" - Workshop led by Mary Embry, Fair Trade Bloomington board member

The event is free, encourages women to become involved in civic life and focuses on creating positive environmental change in the Bloomington community.

Co-sponsors include City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Women, City of Bloomington Community & Family Resources Department, City of Bloomington Office of the Clerk, Indiana University Women's Student Association, Girls Inc., Asian Culture Center, Ivy Tech Community College, Middle Way House, American Association of University Women, City of Bloomington Commission on Sustainability, and Women Inspire.
