Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington Sanitation Department reminds residents that television sets discarded following the June 12 conversion to an all-digital signal will not be picked up as part of weekly trash services. Residents who wish to dispose of old television sets during the switch to an all-digital signal may use the following services:

  • Best Buy, located at 2721 E. 3rd St., will accept television sets smaller than 32 inches for recycling. There is a fee of $10.00 for the drop off, but Best Buy will give residents a $10.00 gift card in return. Best Buy can be reached at 336-7921.
  • The Monroe County Hazardous Materials Facility, located at 3400 S. Walnut St., will accept television sets for recycling. There is a charge of $6 to $21 depending on the weight of the television set. The Hazardous Materials Facility can be reached at 349-2828.
  • Residents should also consider donating functional television sets to second hand stores and charities.

Federal legislation passed by Congress late last year authorized the switch to a universal digital signal, making televisions still running on the traditional analog system obsolete. The original deadline, set for February of this year, was extended to June 12, 2009. For information on the switch to digital and for a list of frequently asked questions, please visit the Federal Communications Commission site at http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/digitaltv.html.

For more information regarding television or waste disposal, please contact Shelby Walker, City Director of Sanitation, at 349-3505.
