Mayor Kruzan Proclaims February Spay/Neuter Month in Bloomington

Bloomington, IN - In conjunction with an ongoing national campaign and the Humane Society of America's annual Spay Day USA, Mayor Mark Kruzan has proclaimed February in Bloomington as "Spay/Neuter Month."

More than 3 million animals are destroyed each year in the United States due to overcrowded shelters and lack of population control measures. By dedicating the month of February to raising awareness in the community, the City and its community partners are looking to educate residents and promote responsible behavior toward animals. These programs are essential to preventing animal euthanasia, and as a result Pets ALIVE Indiana, which has helped fix nearly 7,000 dogs and cats, is further discounting rates during the month to encourage owners to spay or neuter their pets.

"Many thanks to the Mayor and the City for understanding the significance of these types of initiatives," said Pets ALIVE Executive Director James McNamara. "The City Animal Shelter has long been a tremendous partner, and we're eager to make Spay/Neuter Month in Bloomington a springboard for our efforts for the rest of the year."

Throughout the month, groups like Pets ALIVE will be sponsoring promotions to make pet services even more accessible to the public. On February 20-21, the Monroe County Humane Association will be distributing spay/neuter vouchers for County residents. Additionally, Pets ALIVE will be hosting a "Neuterthon" on Monday, Feb. 22, providing free male cat neutering to the first 50 people to come in.
