Bloomington, IN -- The City of Bloomington Housing and Neighborhood Development (HAND) department will be offering the first round of Neighborhood Leadership Series classes on Thursday, Feb. 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Fairview Elementary School, 627 W. 8th St.

The Neighborhood Leadership Series is a set of free classes offered to neighborhood residents quarterly to enhance leadership skills, share best practices and provide interaction between City departments and neighborhoods.

The theme of the Feb. 10 class is "How Do I Make it Work in My Neighborhood" and will focus on how the HAND department can help neighborhoods address issues they are facing, and will give participants the opportunity to hear from neighborhood leaders with hands-on experience addressing various issues.

Speakers at the class include:

  • Liz and Skip Sluder of Broadview Neighborhood Association, who will share their experience with the Neighborhood Cleanup Grants, including how they received the grant, how they organized the event and the impact it had on their neighborhood.
  • Jane Goodman of the Maple Heights neighborhood will share how to reclaim problem areas in your neighborhood. Jane will share her story of how a problem area was turned around by resident efforts and how a relationship was further developed with the City.
  • Patrick Murray of the Prospect Hill Neighborhood Association will share how the neighborhood has been very active in its ability to build capacity through the City grants it has received, how it implemented a Conservation District and Neighborhood Plan, and how it has enhanced the local park.
  • Ann Kreilkamp will tell the story of the Green Acres Neighborhood Garden, a two-year old initiative meant to relocalize capacity to grow and preserve food through permaculture workshops, partnerships with IU SPEA sustainability classes and other organizations, and slide presentations to neighborhood associations and other groups. This effort is being extensively blogged at www. tendrepress.com/category/ongoing-blogs/urban-farmstead/, and is unusual in that it spearheads the idea of public and neighborhood use of privately owned land.
Participants of the class can enter for a drawing to win a free home energy audit offered by HAND. To register contact Vickie Provine at [mailto:provinev@bloomington.in.gov] or call 349-3505.
