Mayor Hamilton to Read at Preschool Story Hour, Dedicate Little Free Library, Honor Young Volunteer on Friday

Mayor Hamilton will be the guest reader during this week’s Preschool Story Hour on Friday, September 8. The weekly Bloomington Parks & Recreation event takes place at Peoples Park from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Fridays in September.

“I appreciate this opportunity to share my deep love of reading with children, and I will encourage each of them to read every chance they get,” commented Mayor Hamilton.

After the reading, the mayor will join Tina Peterson and Jennifer Myers of the Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County (CFBMC) for a dedication of the new Little Free Library in Peoples Park, donated by the CFBMC.

Little Free Libraries are popping up throughout the community, thanks to volunteers who construct and install them in visible areas, making it easy for residents to share or borrow a book right in their own neighborhood. Volunteers stock the little libraries with books for readers of all ages.

Mayor Hamilton will honor one such volunteer at the event, 9-year-old Therese Stosberg, who stocks her bike’s cargo bags with books and serves as a circulation manager for several Little Free Libraries in her Bloomington neighborhood.

Preschool Story Hour is part of a commitment to bring family-friendly programming to Peoples Park and also highlights the City's commitment to early childhood education, the importance of which was stressed in the 2016 Wage Growth Task Force’s recommendations.

Coupons for free ice cream, compliments of Hartzell's Ice Cream, will be provided to children attending the event.
