City of Bloomington Proposes New Location for Police Headquarters

The City of Bloomington is exploring a new location for the Bloomington Police Department (BPD) headquarters, recommending the building at 714 South Rogers Street as the preferred site.

During a public meeting on Monday, January 27, city officials highlighted several reasons this location is well-suited for the police department. The building offers ample space for future expansion, is centrally located, and is accessible by public transit. The site also has the support of police staff and union members, and its sturdy construction makes it a strong candidate for a secure, modern headquarters.

In its presentation, the city shared why previous proposals, such as relocating to Showers West or expanding the current headquarters, were less feasible:

  • Showers West:

    • Would have been a short-term solution.
    • Lacked easy access to public transit.
    • Provided limited room for expansion.
    • Did not align with police department needs or fit within the original budget.
  • Expanding the Current Headquarters:

    • Would require purchasing additional land.
    • Necessitate temporarily relocating the police department during renovations.
    • Current building issues, such as flood damage and ongoing water infiltration, remain costly challenges.

While the Rogers Street location presents a promising solution, it also comes with challenges. The building’s interior would need to be demolished and rebuilt to meet modern city standards. Additionally, the project would require the development of a new design plan.

If approved, the city estimates the Rogers Street project would take approximately 18 months to complete.

The City of Bloomington is committed to ensuring the police department has a secure, functional, and accessible home to serve the community effectively.
