Bloomington, IN -- Mayor Mark Kruzan announced a new mentoring partnership between the City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Black Males and Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of South Central Indiana. The partnership will help identify adult males to mentor black male youth.

"Big Brothers Big Sisters has been making positive impacts on children and empowering them to succeed for years," said Kruzan. "We are excited about this new local partnership, which our Commission on the Status of Black Males has helped create."

Big Brothers Big Sisters will pair children with adults identified by the Commission and screened by BBBS, and will result in in-school, one-to-one mentoring for an hour per week. Along with individual mentoring in schools, the initiative will include group activities and field trips, such as visits to IU athletic events.

Mentors will be invited to meet every four to six weeks to share mentoring experiences and best practices.

The program officially begins with a "Call Out" to recruit mentors on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, beginning at 5:15 p.m. at the Monroe County History Center, 202 E. Sixth Street. This event will include testimonials from Charlie Nelms, former vice president for Institutional Development and Student Affairs for Indiana University, and others, and an explanation of the mentoring initiative. Big Brothers Big Sisters will be on hand to sign up adult mentors. Adult males, particularly African American males, are invited to the "Call Out" to learn about this partnership and how they can positively influence local youth.

For more information about the mentoring initiative, contact Craig Brenner, Special Projects Coordinator, at 349-3471 or [mailto:brennerc@bloomington.in.gov].
