Bloomington
, IN - The City of Bloomington has completed its Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) amendment process, and the revised document is now available to the public.

"While the UDO amendment process was a long one, we believe that the thoroughness and attention to detail resulted in a stronger code to guide land use and development in Bloomington," said City Planning Director Tom Micuda. "We look forward to working with both the Plan Commission and Council to implement these amendments."

The UDO, the first iteration of which was adopted by action of the Plan Commission and City Council in 2007, sets forth regulations governing land use, development standards and subdivisions of property located within the City limits and Areas Intended for Annexation (AIFA). AIFA are those areas outside the City's corporate boundaries that have been designated for future annexation.

Beginning in early 2008, the City developed a package of UDO amendments designed to correct errors and omissions in the original document and to enhance certain areas of the code. After a process that included six hearings before the Plan Commission and five hearings before the Common Council, the Council's adoption of the UDO amendments became official on Nov. 6, 2009. The effective date of the new amendments was delayed until Dec. 7, 2009, to ensure that Planning Department staff had time to edit and produce the new document and to distribute it to interested parties. Any permit applications or development proposals submitted to the City on or after Dec. 7 will be subject to the new version of the UDO.

The UDO can be found in Adobe PDF format on the City's website at http://bloomington.in.gov/udo. Black and white copies can be purchased for $10 at the Planning Department at City Hall, 401 N. Morton Street, Suite 160. Both color and black and white copies also may be purchased at Mr. Copy at 501 E. 10th Street.

For more information about the UDO, please contact the Planning Department at 349-3423.
