City King Commission Announces Web Design Contest Winners

- The City of Bloomington's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission has announced the winners of its annual Web Design Contest for students in elementary, middle and high schools.

The contest was open to students in both the Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) and the Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation (RBB). Students who participated were asked to address the question "If Martin Luther King Jr. were alive today, what advice would he give to President Barack Obama?"

The overall contest winner, with the highest rated entry, is Ethan Briggs from Batchelor Middle School.

Second Place - Casey Thompson, Bloomington North High School.

Winners will receive cash prizes and be recognized at a reception at First United Methodist Church, 219 E. 4th Street, at 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010. All participants are invited to attend. Contest winners also will be listed in the program at the King Birthday Celebration on January 18 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E Kirkwood Ave.

Diane Jung, Events Planner at the Indiana University Office of the President, and Professor Martin Siegel of the IU School of Informatics and Computing, chaired the Web Design Contest committee. Additional committee members included Maureen Biggers, IU School of Informatics and Computing Assistant Dean for Diversity and Education, and Craig Brenner, Special Projects Coordinator for the City's Community and Family Resources. Graduate students in the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing served as judges. They included Binaebi Akah, Candace Buggs, Anna Eaglin, Holt Ellis, Fanxing Kong, Corinthe Harris, Ravikumar Jayaraman, Nina Mehta, Eugene Siew, Kathleen Surfus, and Anjana Thirumalai. Additional support was provided by Clint Mahoney and Terry Daugherty of MCCSC and Charlie Beima of RBB.
