He came into foster care in February as a shy, watchful dog who hung back at the edges of a room, which is no small feat when you're 75 pounds and tall enough to counter-surf without trying! He still needs time and space with new people, men especially, but the warm-up is temporary and what comes after isn't. Once Luigi decides you're his person, he is all in — he's your ride-or-die. Here's what his foster family has to say: The best measure of how far he's come is my husband. Luigi was wary of men when he arrived; now he pesters him to come out to the yard every single morning to play. Nobody rushed him. We gave him room and let him make up his own mind, and he did. He's a velcro dog in the truest sense — he follows me room to room, checks in constantly, settles wherever I land, and gives me "flat tires" in my socks. He's a homebody, too. He enjoys his walks (no pulling, steady pace, lots of sniffing and checking his pee-mails), but his favorite part is the walk home. He'll pick up speed on the last stretch and — once we're in the driveway — dash straight for the front door (after I request a "halt," a check-in, and a solid "stay"). Training is where he really shines. He's food-motivated and smart, and he loves getting it right and hearing "good boi!" What sets him apart is how it sticks: once a skill is on lock, it's on lock. No fading, no deviation, no testing you next Tuesday to see if the rules have changed. He has sit, stay, halt, down, and leave it down solid, and we're building reliable recall and walking at heel. He's also solidly muzzle trained, which every vet and nail trimmer will appreciate. There's a lot more in this dog for anyone who wants to keep going with him — scent work, tricks, agility, a CGC, whatever his person is interested in. At home he's easy. Reliably house-trained, crate-tolerant, and happy to work on a frozen stuffed Kong when we head out. At night he sleeps quietly on his mat at the foot of the bed. He's shown no signs of guarding his people, food, or toys. He lives with our cranky senior dog and adores her: he invites her to play every day and they wrestle until somebody's done (usually her). He reads her well and knows exactly when to give her space. The part that's hardest to describe is just how very much Weejee loves the people he's chosen. It's pure, uncomplicated, and enormous, and it does not waver. He'll be at your side for the rest of his life, checking on you — all of him, all the time. Big feet, big head, even bigger heart. Weejee has come so far in his journey. And he's ready for the next step — his forever family!
