Traffic Suggestions

314-398 West Kirkwood Avenue

Case Date:
8/9/2017

Ever since the 4-way Stop signs were added to the intersection of Kirkwood and Madison, it has become more dangerous for pedestrians to cross Kirkwood. I live at the corner of this intersection and cross several times a day on foot, taking my school to school, shopping, etc. Individual cars may stop but never both cars going in each direction on Kirkwood. We find ourselves in the middle of the intersection constantly with a car stopped going east but another zipping through going west. I understand why the extra Stop signs were added: there were car accidents on occasion. Now thanks to this well-intended addition we can't cross safely as pedestrians because people only think about where THEY'RE going, not that both east and west moving vehicle have to stop at the SAME time to allow pedestrians to cross. So either revert back to having only stop signs going North and South on Madison or add a traffic light. This intersection has become infinitely more dangerous for residents and children who don't always look BOTH ways before crossing the street. This is URGENT especially now that school has started.

Biking & Walking

East 7th Street

Case Date:
8/9/2017

In the transition from Longview Ave. to E. 7th St., the asphalt multi-use lane turns into a double-wide cement sidewalk. I've always stayed on the path because it links directly to the underpass at the bridge and seems and extension of the bike path. But today someone told me, "Get off the sidewalk idiot!" I pride myself on following the rules of bicycling. AQm I right or wrong to be using that stretch of cement? Also, Smith Road between 3rd St. and Moore's Pike is a disaster for bicyclists--way too narrow to safely bike on the road, but only a cement sidewalk on the west side, which then vanishes to become a multi-use path on the WEST side of the road, which then vanishes again at the corner of Moore's Pike to become a sidewalk traveling west. How can my kids safely ride their bikes down Smith Road!?

My question is concerning parking in the 4th street garage. I have a monthly pass and park in the garage Monday - Friday. There are signs that say "Do Not Back In." Why is this a rule? It is easier to pull out at night if I back into my spot. But I don't want to get a ticket for parking illegal. Thanks for your time.

Biking & Walking

1. Many of our faculty, staff and students (as well as others) have to cross 10th street to get to their parking lots behind Geology or the Fee Lane garage. Although there is a pedestrian crossing, most cars do not stop and it is difficult to cross. Also, when the buses are stopped, cars often pass on the left and come very close to hitting us. This has happened to me and many others many times. I was almost hit again yesterday. I believe that if the zone was better marked on the road or around the road and/or had flashing lights like some others around the campus, cars would be more prone to slow down and respect the rules. Last year, I contacted the IU Police Dept. who informed me that the street belonged to the city of Bloomington and that they would mention it to them. However, I never heard another word from them and the zone remains dangerous. Is there something that the school can do before someone gets seriously injured? We would all be very gratefulīŠ
