City of Bloomington Utilities Issues Sanitary Sewer Overflow Advisory

Bloomington, Ind. — The City of Bloomington Utilities has issued a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) advisory for the following area after an SSO was confirmed at that location on Tuesday, February 27.

It is unknown when this SSO began, but it was called to the attention of the City of Bloomington Utilities on February 27, when a nearby resident reported a noticeable sewer odor in the area. The significant amount of rainfall received within the past week is thought to be the primary contributor for this SSO.

The City of Bloomington Utilities followed the proper clean-up protocol and will continue to monitor the situation. The process of determining the volume of flow generated from this sanitary sewer overflow is ongoing.

Residents in the aforementioned area are advised to take precautions when coming into contact with untreated sewage that may have accumulated as a result of this overflow. Any individual who has come into direct contact with untreated sewage is advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.

The City of Bloomington Utilities is committed to a more efficient and reliable wastewater collection and treatment system, and reducing the number of sanitary sewer overflows is a major emphasis in that effort.

The City of Bloomington Utilities also is committed to transparency with respect to the residents of this community. This includes issuing public advisories in the event a confirmed sanitary sewer overflow has occurred.
