Bloomington, IN -- Mayor Mark Kruzan announced
today that the City of Bloomington's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Birthday Celebration Commission has been chosen to receive $5,000
in funding for volunteer service activities on the federal King
holiday, January 16, 2006.
The funding was awarded by the organization Service for Peace,
and consists of monies originally granted to it by the
Corporation for National and Community Service. The funding is to
be provided to volunteer service projects involving significant
numbers of disadvantaged youth. The youth may be either
volunteers or the beneficiaries of volunteer service activities.
This funding will supplement local funds being used by the King
Commission to help organizations pay for materials and supplies
used by volunteers on the holiday.
Groups interested in applying for funding must submit project
proposals to the King Commission. Eligible applicants include
nonprofit organizations, businesses, faith-based organizations,
schools, community and neighborhood organizations, public and
private agencies, and governmental entities. Proposed projects
must begin or occur on January 16, 2006.
The application form is available online at
[www.bloomington.in.gov/cfrd].
The deadline to apply for funding is Thursday.
Service projects needing volunteers for "A Day On! Not A Day Off"
will be listed on the City's web site at
[www.bloomington.in.gov] as
proposals are received. People across the nation will celebrate
the King Holiday by coming together in service to others. It is
in this spirit that we encourage local organizations to offer
opportunities for service. For more information, e-mail Craig
