Bloomington, IN -- Mayor Mark Kruzan announced today that in honor of Disability Awareness Month, the City of Bloomington Engineering Department and the Council for Community Accessibility will host an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Workshop. The event will be held March 22, 2006, from 9 am to noon in the Council Chambers at City Hall in the Showers Building at 401 N. Morton Street.
Robin Jones of the Great Lakes ADA and Accessible IT Center and Lois Thibult of the US Access Board will present ADA topics including curb ramps, detectable warnings, materials for detectable warnings, sidewalk slopes, accessible parking, traffic calming, and serving multiple modes of transportation. They also will introduce Visitability, a concept to make it easier for disabled persons to visit typical homes that are not fully accessible.
Contractors who do work in the public right-of-way, designers and anyone interested in the subject are invited to attend. The workshop will be interactive and attendees are encouraged to bring plans or photos of specific problems to discuss. Questions can be asked at the workshop or submitted in advance to Joyce Williams, PE, (349-3417).
